OakLeap Maritime Capital is an operator-led maritime investment business.
Judge the asset. Structure the transaction. Represent the owner.
Maritime assets are technical, operational and cyclical at once. The distance between what an asset is and what it could become — commercially, technically, operationally — is where mispricing lives. OakLeap evaluates that gap with people who have built, converted, surveyed, commanded and operated maritime assets themselves.
We judge the ship and the situation with operating, technical and class depth.
We structure each transaction around the asset, its financing and its exit.
We represent the owner once the asset is acquired, monitoring performance, managers and key ownership matters throughout ownership; investment decisions remain with the owner.
Owner-side governance of the appointed managers.
We prefer opportunities where we can understand the downside, influence the outcome and preserve more than one route to value.
OakLeap focuses on asset-backed maritime opportunities where operating, technical or ownership complexity can create mispricing, optionality or opportunities for active value creation.
We are interested in situations where purchase basis, asset quality, cash-flow characteristics and operating optionality can be understood together.
Motivated sellers, ownership transition, refinancing pressure, lender involvement or portfolio rationalisation where transaction complexity may affect price or execution.
Where condition, cost, maintenance, procurement, commercial execution or management can be improved through active ownership.
Where chartering or industrial demand gives visibility on utilisation and cash generation.
Where technical or commercial intervention can expand employment, improve efficiency, protect competitiveness or alter the economics.
Stranded, part-built or resale newbuildings, contract assignments, and early vessels from new or expanding yards.
“Transformation is never assumed. It is pursued only where vessel architecture, market demand, capital cost, execution risk and remaining economic life support the investment case.”
Each transaction is considered on its own merits. Ownership, financing and transaction structure are determined according to the asset, counterparties and commercial circumstances.
Leverage is assessed as part of an asset’s resilience, not only its capital efficiency: appropriate debt can support a sound maritime asset; inappropriate debt can make it fragile.
We also advise owners, lenders and yards on vessel and yard financing, leasing and restructuring in specific maritime transactions. We do not advise on, arrange or intermediate investments in shares, fund interests, bonds or other securities.
Where a sound vessel or yard is under financial pressure and the numbers support it, we develop financing and restructuring options, case by case, that may provide owners and lenders with alternatives to a distressed sale.
The ship manager manages the vessel. OakLeap acts on the owner's behalf in monitoring the asset and appointed managers; investment and ownership decisions remain with the owner.
OakLeap's intended ownership approach is built around visibility and active owner-side oversight. Oversight may include technical condition, operating expenditure, dry-dock planning, vessel performance, employment, compliance, financing and selected value-enhancement initiatives.
Maintenance · reliability · dry dock · capex
Opex · procurement · utilisation · financing
Fuel efficiency · emissions intensity · CII · operational KPIs
Employment · chartering oversight · charterability · exit readiness
OakLeap's strategy is based on situations we can assess and influence. We are therefore cautious where investment outcomes depend predominantly on factors outside our control.
Pure directional freight-rate speculation — transactions whose case requires a substantial market rise simply to work.
Transformation without commercial demand — technically interesting projects without credible employment or economic justification.
Unbalanced leverage — structures where debt service leaves insufficient resilience for shipping-market volatility or technical events.
Unquantifiable technical exposure — assets where condition, capex or regulatory liabilities cannot be understood to an acceptable degree.
Single-path exits — situations where realisation depends on one highly specific buyer, event or market assumption.
Potential routes to realisation are considered from the beginning of the investment process and may include asset sale, refinancing, portfolio combination, strategic sale or other transaction-specific alternatives. The preferred route and investment period depend on the individual asset, employment profile, market conditions and capital structure.
We prefer opportunities where we can understand the downside, influence the outcome and preserve more than one route to value.
Buy the asset. Improve the capability. Change the economics.
Technical optionality can matter in maritime investing, but only when it is commercially relevant, technically executable and supported by risk-adjusted economics. OakLeap assesses transformation as an investment lever — not as a service line and never as an assumption.
A vessel's present configuration may not reflect its full commercial utility. But technical possibility alone is not an investment thesis. OakLeap looks for situations where latent capability can be identified, costed, risk-assessed and connected to credible demand.
“We do not modify vessels because technically we can. We act only where the intervention changes the investment economics.”
Would we still want to own the asset if the transformation were never executed?
Where the answer is yes, transformation can remain upside optionality rather than dependency.
Latent cargo capability not fully reflected in current employment or valuation; whether changes to reefer capacity, power, ventilation, access, stability or cargo systems can reposition an asset toward higher-value employment.
Lens: commercial demand first, engineering second.
Hull, machinery, propulsion, fuel-performance and digital optimisation to improve operating economics, emissions intensity and vessel competitiveness.
Lens: efficiency matters when it protects or improves cash flow, competitiveness or exit value.
Selected capability upgrades, including dynamic-positioning enhancement, where vessel architecture, redundancy, class requirements and contract demand justify the intervention.
Lens: not “can it be converted?” but “should this specific asset be converted?”
Targeted capex, dry-dock intervention, machinery renewal, system upgrades or commercial repositioning that improves reliability, utility and exit readiness.
Lens: remaining economic life must justify the capital invested.
In a prior private-equity-backed maritime programme, Sunil led the technical work supporting the repositioning of conventional container tonnage for specialised refrigerated-cargo employment. The work included technical due diligence, conversion concept development, CFD-led ventilation and cooling design, power and electrical integration, stability, structural modifications and class-related engineering. The physical conversion programme commenced in 2016. The CFD methodology was subsequently published in Springer.
This case relates to prior professional experience before the formation of OakLeap. Vessel identities, counterparties and transaction-specific information are intentionally omitted. Supporting detail may be shared with appropriate counterparties under agreed confidentiality arrangements.
“If the answers do not align, the transformation should not proceed.”
We welcome opportunities involving technically or operationally under-optimised vessels where commercial demand, asset architecture and investment economics may support a different use, capability or ownership outcome.
Each principal brings a distinct discipline to the investment process — investment and structured finance, technical due diligence and asset oversight, and marine operations and risk.
OakLeap is a new firm. The experience shown relates to the principals' prior roles.

Early-stage maritime opportunities
People close to vessels, markets, yards, finance and operations sometimes identify an opportunity before it becomes a formal transaction.
If you have identified a maritime situation or insight that deserves serious evaluation, we would be interested in understanding it.
OakLeap may already be considering, or may independently develop, similar assets, situations or themes. Sharing an idea does not create exclusivity, an advisory or agency relationship, or any entitlement to compensation. Where we decide to progress something together, any role, confidentiality arrangements and commercial terms will be agreed separately in writing.
Please keep initial contact high-level and do not send confidential or proprietary information until appropriate arrangements are in place.
OakLeap is a small, principal-led firm and does not currently advertise open roles. We are always interested to hear from experienced people in maritime, shipping finance, technical operations or investment.
If you would like us to keep you in mind, please email a short note and your CV. We will contact you only if a suitable opportunity arises.
Any personal information you send is handled in line with our Privacy Policy.
OakLeap Maritime Capital sits between the ship and the capital. Based in London EC3, at the heart of the City's shipping and finance community, with partners based in Piraeus, Dubai and Mumbai, we bring together investment judgement, financing and restructuring expertise, and direct technical and operating depth.
Our work is built around three areas: judge the asset, structure the transaction, and represent the owner once the asset is acquired.
Maritime investing sits at the intersection of capital, machinery, regulation, commercial employment and operations. OakLeap is structured around that reality. The firm combines investment judgement with technical and operating depth, so asset condition, cash flow, commercial utility and execution risk can be considered together rather than in isolation.
Our principals have particular expertise in distressed maritime assets: sound vessels and yards under financial pressure, including situations too small or too hands-on for larger funds. Where the numbers support it, we develop financing and restructuring options, case by case, that may provide owners and lenders with alternatives to a distressed sale. We work deal by deal: each transaction is judged, structured and overseen on its own merits.
“Oak” reflects resilience, patience and long-term judgement. “Leap” reflects movement, opportunity and the willingness to act when the investment case is clear — the ability to move decisively without giving up discipline.
The principals maintain selected interests across the maritime sector. Those interests can provide useful operating perspective, but principal-affiliated businesses are not treated as captive service providers to transactions in which OakLeap is involved. Any potential related-party appointment is subject to disclosure, conflict management and arm's-length review.
